This handmade ring features an 18 gauge sterling silver butterfly perched on the petals of a copper flower with a genuine dark blue Lapis Lazuli caught between the wing beats.

First, the flower was sawed from an 18 gauge copper sheet, stamped with leaf veins, and slightly roll the ends of petals on a steel dapping block. The butterfly was then sawed from sterling silver and using a pierce and cut technique, I produced the wing cut outs to give an airy feel to the form. The depth, dimension, and realism were developed by hammering the butterfly on a dapping block to curve the wings and bring the butterfly to life.

The ring shank was also made by hand from 16 gauge sterling silver wire by welding the ends together with an acetylene torch and then forming the shank with a hammer over a steel ring mandrel. All of the individual elements, a 3mm genuine Lapis Lazuli stone with custom setting, the ring shank, flower form, and butterfly form were welded together to create this ring. After a subtle patina was applied to the flower, the ring was finished with a light but uneven polish to further define the highlights and details in this unique ring.
